The real Lucas is my grandson, who lives by the river in Madrid, a long way away from Brighton, where I live.
This book is my way of trying to be part of Lucas’s life every day, until he’s bored of the book or his racing car. This is the first edition of The Race, printed so that I can take it to Lucas in Madrid, along with a shiny silver car that I found in a Brighton charity shop.
